Is OpenAI Planning ChatGPT Group Chats for Smarter Collaboration?

What Will It Mean for Teams?

OpenAI is reportedly working on a new Group Chats feature for ChatGPT, designed to help teams collaborate and brainstorm directly within shared AI-powered conversations. The upcoming feature could transform how people work together online, blending human discussion with AI assistance in a single chat.

Bringing Teams Together in One Space

With ChatGPT Group Chats, multiple users will be able to join the same conversation and interact both with each other and with the AI. This setup could make it easier for teams to coordinate, discuss ideas, and find solutions without switching between individual chats or apps.

The feature seems inspired by Microsoft’s Copilot collaboration mode but with OpenAI’s own twist. Unlike basic group invites seen elsewhere, ChatGPT’s version is expected to include customizable prompts and response controls — giving users more flexibility in managing how and when the AI participates in a discussion.

Smarter Collaboration Controls

OpenAI appears to be testing tools that let users set the system prompt for group discussions and decide whether the AI responds automatically or only when tagged. These controls could make brainstorming sessions more focused, allowing participants to manage the flow of ideas without overwhelming input from the model.

For professionals, educators, and research teams, this could simplify project coordination, reduce context loss, and encourage real-time collaboration with intelligent support from ChatGPT.

A December Launch Could Be on the Cards

OpenAI often clusters new feature rollouts in December, hinting that Group Chats might arrive as part of its end-of-year update cycle. The company’s “12 Days of OpenAI” announcements last year introduced several major updates, and this feature could follow a similar timeline.

While the exact release date remains unconfirmed, early signs suggest OpenAI is gearing up to make ChatGPT a more powerful collaborative productivity tool. If launched soon, Group Chats could mark an important step toward integrating AI more seamlessly into everyday teamwork.
