Gemini will replace Google Assistant on Android in 2026

Google has officially pushed back its plan to replace Google Assistant with Gemini. The transition will now extend into 2026. Earlier, the company said Gemini would take over by the end of 2025. However, Google now says it needs more time to ensure a smooth and seamless shift for users.

The update confirms that Gemini remains Google’s future-facing AI assistant. However, the complete migration will happen gradually. This change affects Android phones, tablets, and even Google’s iOS Assistant app.

Why Google delayed the Gemini transition

Google says the delay will help deliver a better experience. Therefore, the company wants to avoid disruption during the holiday season. Additionally, there is limited time left in 2025 to handle a large-scale migration.

At the moment, users can still switch back to Google Assistant inside the Gemini app. This option remains available even on newer devices, including the Pixel 10 series. However, that flexibility may not last once the transition begins.

What happens to Google Assistant in 2026

Once the migration completes, Google Assistant will no longer be available on Android phones and tablets. The standalone iOS app will also be discontinued. Gemini will then become the default and only assistant across supported platforms.

The rollout is expected to happen in phases. As a result, users may see changes at different times. Google plans to share more details in the coming months.

Where Gemini is already available

Gemini is already expanding beyond smartphones. It is available on Wear OS devices today. Meanwhile, Google is rolling it out to Google TV and Android Auto. The Gemini for Home Early Access program also continues for smart speakers and displays.

This broader rollout suggests Google is preparing Gemini for a larger role across its ecosystem.

A decade-long shift for Google’s assistant strategy

Google Assistant launched in 2016. Therefore, 2026 marks a full decade of Assistant’s presence. Gemini represents Google’s next chapter in AI-powered assistance, built around more advanced models and deeper integrations.

For now, Google Assistant continues to work. However, its replacement is no longer a question of “if,” but “when.”
