Google and Magic Leap Extend Partnership for Android XR Glasses

Google has taken another big step into the future of mixed reality. The tech giant, in collaboration with Magic Leap, has unveiled a prototype of its Android XR glasses, expanding on a partnership that began in 2024.

A Three-Year Extension to Build the XR Future

Magic Leap confirmed at a recent event that it has extended its partnership with Google for another three years. The companies are now working together to design and develop the Android XR ecosystem, focusing on wearable devices that merge real and digital worlds.

During the presentation, Magic Leap’s CEO Ross Rosenberg and SVP Jade Meskill joined Google’s Senior Director of Product Management for XR, Juston Payne, to showcase the first prototype concept. The event marked a significant milestone in Google’s effort to bring AI-powered XR glasses to consumers.

Combining Magic Leap’s Optics with Google’s MicroLED Tech

Magic Leap’s press release revealed that the new glasses integrate Google’s Raxium microLED light engine. This advanced display technology enables digital content to blend naturally with the physical world, creating seamless mixed reality experiences.

The prototype’s design keeps the “display” portion of the lens almost invisible at most angles, allowing users to stay immersed in the real world while interacting with digital overlays.

Smart, Comfortable, and AI-Ready

The concept glasses shown on stage highlight a sleek, lightweight form factor — a key factor in making wearable AR comfortable and practical. The video demo suggested how users could access real-time AI assistance while maintaining focus on their surroundings.

Magic Leap described itself as an “AR ecosystem partner,” focusing on supporting major technology leaders like Google. This indicates that Magic Leap’s role is primarily to develop and supply the optics and AR hardware foundation, while Google drives software, AI, and Android XR integration.

Prototype to Become the Foundation of Android XR

These new glasses resemble the prototypes Google has teased over recent months, featuring similar camera placements and frame design. Reports suggest that Samsung could also play a role in bringing Android XR hardware to consumers, possibly as early as next year.
