Nike’s Robotic Shoes To Redefine Running

A Step Toward the Future of Footwear

Nike has taken a bold leap into robotics with Project Amplify, a powered footwear system that aims to enhance natural movement. The company unveiled the early design this week, signaling its plan to bring robotic shoes to market by 2028.

Powered Movement Meets Everyday Comfort

Unlike traditional running shoes, Project Amplify combines mechanical design with wearable comfort. The system includes an elastic cuff that wraps around the calf, containing a ring of small batteries. A robotic arm connects the cuff to a motorized hinge near the ankle, giving every step a subtle power boost.

The motor assists with each stride, pulling gently on the heel to mimic and amplify the wearer’s natural movement. The result is smoother steps and reduced fatigue — whether you’re walking long distances or jogging for fitness.

Designed for Regular Runners and Walkers

Nike says Project Amplify isn’t built for elite athletes but for everyday runners clocking a 10–12-minute mile pace. The goal is simple: to help people run longer, stay active, and feel less strain on their legs. The device may also benefit people who stand for long hours or need extra support for mobility.

A Collaboration with Robotics Experts

The project is being developed in partnership with Dephy, a Massachusetts-based robotics company known for its bionic footwear. Nike engineers and athletes are testing prototypes both outdoors and at the brand’s innovation lab in Beaverton, Oregon. Early results suggest that this wearable tech could extend endurance while maintaining comfort.

Part of a Bigger Innovation Push

Alongside Project Amplify, Nike also revealed a neuroscience-based footwear line called Mind. These shoes feature 22 foam nubs on each sole that press gently into the foot, simulating the feeling of walking barefoot while providing support. Nike says this design helps users feel “grounded” — promoting both mental and physical balance.

Additionally, Nike is working on a sustainable apparel line called Aero-Fit, made entirely from chemically recycled textile waste. The collection will debut with soccer jerseys in summer 2026, marking Nike’s first performance wear made through circular production.

Toward a New Kind of Mobility

Project Amplify represents a new direction for Nike — where sports innovation meets robotics. As the brand continues to experiment with powered wearables, the idea of footwear that adapts to the human body in real time could soon become reality. If successful, Nike’s robotic shoes might make long runs, busy shifts, or everyday walks easier for millions by 2028.
