A New Chapter in OpenAI’s Expansion

OpenAI has acquired Software Applications, Inc., the maker of an unreleased AI interface for Mac called Sky. The tool is designed to act as a natural language assistant that works across apps, helping users write, plan, code, and create.

With this move, OpenAI takes a major step toward embedding its AI tools directly into users’ daily workflows—especially for Mac users who rely on Apple’s software ecosystem.

Sky: The AI That Sees and Acts on Your Screen

Sky is built to work like an AI co-pilot for your computer. It can see what’s on your screen and take actions for you—similar to how AI browsers operate. From writing emails to organizing tasks, the system is meant to streamline productivity and make computing more intuitive.

OpenAI described Sky as an extension of its goal to make technology “empowering, customizable, and intuitive.” The company plans to integrate Sky’s technology into future versions of ChatGPT and Atlas, bringing more real-time, on-device intelligence.

The Team Behind Sky Has Apple Roots

Sky’s founding team includes Ari Weinstein and Conrad Kramer, best known for creating Workflow, which Apple acquired in 2017. The app later became Shortcuts, a key automation feature across iOS and macOS.

Sky’s third co-founder, Kim Beverett, also worked at Apple for nearly a decade on projects like Safari, Messages, FaceTime, and SharePlay. Their combined experience suggests that Sky was built with deep understanding of Apple’s ecosystem and user behavior.

A Subtle Competition with Apple’s Own AI Plans

Apple has been gradually introducing Apple Intelligence, its suite of AI-powered tools that handle writing, translation, and image creation. A revamped Siri with ChatGPT integration is also on the way.

However, Apple’s strict approach to privacy and data protection could slow its entry into agentic AI systems—those that can view your screen and act autonomously. These capabilities raise security questions, especially after experts warned about potential risks with AI browsers like ChatGPT Atlas.

Deal Details and OpenAI’s Vision Ahead

OpenAI did not reveal the terms of the acquisition. However, PitchBook data shows that Sky’s parent company raised $6.5 million from investors, including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Figma’s Dylan Field, and Stellation Capital.

The acquisition was led by Nick Turley, Head of ChatGPT, and Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s CEO of Applications. According to OpenAI, Altman only held a passive investment through a fund.

With Sky, OpenAI gains a capable team that has previously shaped how millions interact with Apple devices. The company now appears ready to extend its agentic AI ambitions—bringing ChatGPT beyond browsers and mobile apps into the desktop experience.
