Snapchat Rolls Out Free Prompt-based AI Lens

Now Create Snaps With Custom Prompts for Free

Snapchat is expanding access to its AI-powered “Imagine Lens,” the company’s first open prompt image-generation tool. The Lens, launched in September for paid users, is now available to everyone for free.

With this update, Snapchat users can generate AI images directly from their Snaps using short text prompts. For example, you can type, “Turn me into an alien,” or “Make a grumpy cat,” and the Lens will instantly create that image.

The company says this feature will make creativity easier for users, allowing them to edit photos, experiment with looks, or even test Halloween costume ideas.

How the Imagine Lens works

The new Lens appears in the in-app Lens Carousel, near the front of the lineup. You can also find it by searching “Imagine Lens.”

Once selected, you can edit the caption to write your own prompt or choose from preloaded ideas. The generated images can then be shared on your Snapchat Story, sent to friends, or downloaded to share elsewhere.

Snapchat users already access Lenses over 8 billion times daily, showing just how central these tools are to the platform. The new AI Lens builds on that popularity, blending generative AI with the app’s creative DNA.

A move to stay competitive in the AI race

Snapchat’s decision comes as AI-powered video and photo tools gain popularity across social media. Meta and OpenAI have both launched similar creative AI features that let users generate personalized images and videos.

Meta’s AI tools, for instance, allow photo editing using simple text commands. Meanwhile, OpenAI’s Sora can generate short videos using a one-time recording to capture a user’s face and voice.

With younger users spending more time experimenting with these tools, Snapchat’s move to make its AI Lens free could help it stay competitive and retain its audience.

Availability and rollout

The free version of Imagine Lens is rolling out first in the U.S., with Canada, Great Britain, and Australia next in line. The company plans to expand to more markets soon.

Free users will have access to a limited number of image generations, while paid subscribers will still enjoy unlimited access and exclusive AI features.

AI creativity for everyone

Snapchat’s open prompt Lens reflects the company’s push to make generative AI more accessible. With just a few words, users can now create fun, shareable visuals in seconds.

As more social platforms race to integrate AI, Snapchat’s free Imagine Lens shows how creativity and technology are merging in everyday interactions.
