Sora Expands to Android Users Worldwide

OpenAI’s AI video generator, Sora, is now rolling out on Android in multiple regions, including the U.S., Canada, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam. The launch comes two months after its iOS debut in September, which saw over a million downloads in a week.

The expansion marks a major step for OpenAI, aiming to make its creative AI tool more accessible globally.

Sora retains key features from iOS

The Android version offers all the same features as the iOS app. Users can create AI-generated videos of themselves using the “Cameos” feature. It lets them perform various actions or appear in imaginative settings through their digital likeness.

Sora also includes a TikTok-like social feed, allowing users to share and explore videos from others. This interactive setup positions OpenAI directly against short-form platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and Meta’s newly launched AI video feed, Vibes.

Guardrails strengthened after deepfake backlash

Despite its popularity, Sora has faced scrutiny over deepfakes. Earlier, users misused the app to create inappropriate videos of historical figures, including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. OpenAI quickly paused the feature and reinforced its content guidelines.

The company has also revised its copyright policy. It now follows an “opt-in” model for rights holders, ensuring that copyrighted characters like SpongeBob and Pikachu appear only with permission.

Legal dispute and new features ahead

Sora is currently in a legal dispute with celebrity video platform Cameo over the use of the “Cameos” name. However, OpenAI continues to expand the app’s functionality.

Upcoming updates will let users add AI-generated pets, objects, and multiple video clips to their creations. OpenAI also plans to introduce basic video editing tools and more personalized feeds focusing on selected creators.

When will Sora launch in India?

While OpenAI hasn’t confirmed a release date for India, the app is expected to arrive in early 2026. Given the growing demand for creative AI tools in India, Sora’s Android version could debut soon after broader testing in Asia.
